Semiliki Trust is kicking off the New Year with a strategy meeting of our team of trustees and advisers to plan support for our partners in Congo in the coming years. There are many exciting developments in many of the hospitals we want to share with you, and we will be supporting quality improvements in all aspects of health care, including chronic diseases. Did you know Semiliki supports a network of more than 80 hospitals and health centres? Each of these has a team running it, so we are friends with hundreds of amazing people in Congo (many of them in these photos).
Adranga Hospital (featured above) is on the main road to a gold mine at Durba. Many trucks come past the village and many accidents happen on the road. The small operating theatre serves the local population but needs to expand to cope with the demand of those passing through as well as the many accidents that happen on the road. Recently the maternity block was rehabilitated but the main consultation and hospitalisation block needs urgent renovation.

Other urgent needs for Adranga are xray and ultrasound, biochemistry machine, orthopaedic equipment and a strong fence around the site. In Aru Cité hospital your support helped renovate the operating room and build a new intensive care unit.

For the past year we have sent regular money to support the new administrative block of the nursing university also in Aru, which has 500 students doing different branches of medical sciences. It is one of three universities we support.

Boga District Hospital is run by the Anglican church’s Service Médical. For the past 20 years the area around Boga has been very insecure, but during that time the hospital was rebuilt with support by MSF and the road to get there has become a bit safer in the past 6 months.

Down in Kasindi on the border with Uganda, south of the Ruwenori mountains, foundations are up for a new hospital block and to the west in Beni work has started on a new dental unit.

Semiliki will be continuing to support the roll out chronic disease programmes across the hospitals and training in evidence-based medicines with treatment guidelines.

In Soke centre we’ve just sent money for an ultrasound machine.

Further south in Mutendero, high above the Semiliki river valley plane, Semiliki has sent money to buy dental equipment for a new dental work there in this isolated community that was cut off by militia activity for much of the past decade. Even during very dangerous times the team there have been fast developing the centre.

As the work grows rapidly we look forward to sharing more stories with you. If you are able to increase your regular support by bank transfer, set up a regular transfer, or donate now to help all these developments, all the money goes straight to our partners in Congo, Semiliki has no overheads in the UK.
